Choosing a remodel contractor can be challenging if you're unsure whom to hire.
It's advisable to consult your local Better Business Bureau to find available contractors. You can also use Google to identify potential contractors and select one that meets your needs.
The process of selecting a contractor is crucial. If you only require a specific service, such as an electrician or plumber, you may opt for a contractor who specializes in that area.
If your project is more complex, hiring a "General Contractor" is often the best choice. Obtaining estimates from three general contractors for your project is also a good strategy.
From there, you can decide which contractor you want to work with.
Keep in mind that the lowest-priced contractor may not always be the best option.
Other factors to consider include:
Does the contractor have liability insurance?
Requesting COIs or Certificates of Insurance is always a smart move!
What about building permits?
Who is responsible for obtaining a permit?
Typically, a general contractor (GC) is in charge of obtaining a permit.
Anyone working under that GC must obtain permits for the specific trade work they perform on the project.
Ensure you ask the GC if they have obtained a permit. Ultimately, as the homeowner, you are responsible!
For example, if you are selling your home and fail to disclose all information, and a potential buyer discovers a permit was not obtained, they could sue you for not disclosing the lack of a permit.
